Annual Paid AI Subscriber Growth

The paid AI subscription market did not exist in mid-2022. Three years later, ChatGPT alone has more than 50 million paying subscribers, Anthropic's paid Claude base has more than doubled in 2026, and total industry paid AI subscribers across major products are approaching 100 million. This page tracks the year-by-year buildout of the paid AI subscription market using OpenAI announcements, The Information reporting, Recon Analytics paid-subscriber surveys, Alphabet earnings, and Anthropic disclosures.

Source: Recon Analytics survey of 150,000+ enterprise users (January 2026). Measures voluntary paid subscriber share — distinct from total active users where Microsoft Copilot's M365 bundle inflates numbers through employer provisioning. Other category includes Perplexity Pro, Mistral, and smaller providers.

Source: ChatGPT 50M: OpenAI announcement Feb 2026. Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity figures are AI Behavior Index estimates derived from Recon Analytics paid share (Jan 2026), Alphabet $1.2B Gemini subscription revenue 2025 (Q4 earnings), and Anthropic's confirmed "more than doubled" 2026 paid sub growth. These are estimates because most companies other than OpenAI do not publish absolute paid subscriber counts. Margin of error: ±25% for non-ChatGPT figures.
CHART 4 · THE FORWARD QUESTION

ChatGPT paid subscriber composition: 2025 actual vs 2026 OpenAI forecast

Source: The Information, April 2026 — citing OpenAI internal forecasts. The forecast shows a dramatic strategic shift: ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) declining 80% as users migrate to ChatGPT Go ($5–$8/month). 2030 target: 220 million total paid subscribers, putting OpenAI alongside Netflix (~300M) and Spotify (~220M) in subscriber scale.

About this data

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI. This page focuses on paid subscriber counts for the major consumer AI products — distinct from total monthly active users (which include free-tier users and product integrations) and from enterprise API revenue (which is metered, not subscription-based).

An important caveat for anyone citing this data: most companies in this market do not publish exact paid subscriber counts. OpenAI is the most transparent and reports paid totals across its tiers periodically. Anthropic confirms growth rates (e.g., "paid subs more than doubled") but does not disclose absolute numbers. Google reports Gemini subscription revenue ($1.2B in 2025) but not subscriber counts. Microsoft reports total Copilot users but blurs the line between voluntary paid subscribers and M365-bundled access. Where this page reports non-OpenAI estimates, the figures are derived from third-party surveys (Recon Analytics), public revenue disclosures, and credit card transaction studies. Margin of error on non-OpenAI estimates is approximately ±25%. Data is refreshed quarterly. If you have a study to suggest or notice an error, contact us at research@aibehaviorindex.org.
