AI Adoption in 2023: The Breakout Year

In 2023, generative AI moved from research curiosity to mainstream phenomenon in a single year. ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer app in history within two months, every major tech company launched a competitor, and one-third of organizations began regularly using gen AI in at least one function. This page assembles the data that defines the year — drawn from Pew Research, McKinsey, UBS, PitchBook, and primary OpenAI announcements.

About this data

This page focuses specifically on calendar year 2023 — the period from January 2023 through December 2023. Statistics are drawn from publicly available studies and primary company announcements. Where multiple sources report on the same event, we cite the most authoritative source available and prefer primary announcements over secondary reporting.

The Pew Research Center conducted three separate surveys in 2023 with different sample sizes and slightly different question framings — we note the survey date and sample size in each cited result. The McKinsey survey was conducted in April 2023 and reflects organizational behavior in early- to mid-2023. Data is refreshed quarterly.
