Generative AI vs smartphones, year-by-year US adoption since launch
About this data
The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI. This page compares the consumer adoption trajectory of generative AI to that of smartphones and earlier transformative technologies (radio, TV, internet). All percentages reflect US adoption — household for older technologies, individual adult for newer ones. Sources are cited per chart.
One important methodological caveat to share with anyone citing this data: these technologies are not perfectly comparable. Generative AI is software running on existing infrastructure (smartphone, computer, internet), distributed at near-zero marginal cost and free at base usage tiers. Smartphones required hardware purchase plus a data plan. Television required hardware plus broadcast availability. These structural differences explain part — but not all — of why generative AI's curve is steeper. Even accounting for the lower distribution barriers, gen AI's adoption pace is the fastest measured for any consumer technology in modern survey history. Data is refreshed quarterly.
