ChatGPT Search Feature Adoption

ChatGPT Search has turned OpenAI's chatbot into a genuine search property. By Q2 2026, ChatGPT handled roughly 17% of global digital queries to Google's ~80% — and ChatGPT Search alone processed an estimated 250 to 500 million search-intent queries per week, making it one of the top five search properties in the world by volume. Crucially, Google's search usage has not shrunk in absolute terms: the total search pie grew about 26% globally and AI took the new slice. This page tracks where ChatGPT Search stands against Google, how fast AI-mediated search is rising, and what AI answers are doing to click-through traffic.

About this data

This page compiles published estimates of ChatGPT Search adoption and its position relative to traditional search, drawing on First Page Sage's Q2 2026 market-share report, the Similarweb 2026 AI Search report (via Digital Applied), and analyses from Sedestral and Exposure Ninja.

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.

Why "17% of queries" and "80% market share" coexist: they measure different universes. ChatGPT's ~17% is its share of all global digital queries (search engines + AI assistants combined); the often-cited ~77–80% figure is ChatGPT's share within the AI-chatbot category only. And critically, Google's share falling in relative terms does not mean Google shrank — total search volume grew ~26% globally, so AI captured new query demand rather than simply taking Google's.

Methodology notes: query-volume estimates are panel-modeled (Similarweb) and carry wide error bands — hence the 250–500M weekly range, shown here at its midpoint. Query-share figures blend primary disclosures with secondary analysis and are best read as approximate. Zero-click percentages come from field measurements and vary by query type. The "AI-driven search share over time" series uses disclosed annual anchors with directional interpolation between them.
