ChatGPT Mobile App Adoption

ChatGPT is no longer a web-first product. Its mobile app crossed 1.1 billion monthly active users in April 2026 and has been downloaded more than 1.9 billion times across iOS and Android since launching in May 2023 — making it one of the most-installed consumer apps of the decade and the only AI product anywhere near that scale. This page tracks how mobile adoption grew, how the install curve has cooled from its 2025 peak even as engagement and revenue climb, how consumer spending inside the app has compounded, and how adoption splits between Apple's App Store and Google Play.

Source: Sensor Tower, US, March 2026: iOS 23M downloads / $221M revenue; Google Play 55M downloads / $54M revenue. Android drives far more installs while iOS drives far more revenue — a single-market, single-month snapshot that illustrates the platform split rather than worldwide totals.

About this data

This page compiles published estimates of ChatGPT's mobile app adoption across the Apple App Store and Google Play. Core figures come from mobile-analytics firms — AppMagic, Sensor Tower, and Appfigures (as reported by TechCrunch) — supplemented by Meltwater / We Are Social / DataReportal figures via Statista and OpenAI's own user disclosures.

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.

Why mobile figures differ from "total ChatGPT users": app-store data captures only the native iOS and Android apps. It excludes ChatGPT on the web, the API, ChatGPT Enterprise, and embedded surfaces — so mobile MAU (~1.1B) and OpenAI's reported ~900M weekly active users across all surfaces measure different things and should not be added together. Mobile-analytics estimates are panel- and model-derived, carry error bands, and are revised over time, so single figures are best read as approximate.

Methodology notes: "monthly active users" here is cumulative across iOS and Android as reported by the cited analytics vendors; different vendors define active use slightly differently, which is one reason published MAU figures vary. Download and revenue figures reflect installs and in-app spending billed through the two app stores, net of platform fees. The iOS-vs-Android chart is a single US month (March 2026) used to show the platform pattern — Android skews toward installs, iOS toward revenue — and is not a worldwide or lifetime total. Where 2026 monthly points are not individually published, they are interpolated between disclosed anchors and labeled as trend lines rather than exact monthly readings.
