ChatGPT Market Share: Global Position

ChatGPT remains the most-used AI chatbot in the world, but its dominance is narrowing. By Similarweb's web-visit measure, ChatGPT held about 54.7% of worldwide traffic across the seven largest AI assistants in April 2026 — down from roughly 76.5% in early 2025 — as Google Gemini climbed to 27.4% and Anthropic's Claude became the fastest-growing of the group. This page tracks where ChatGPT stands globally against every major competitor, how that position has shifted over 15 months, and why headline "market share" figures for ChatGPT range from 55% to 68% depending on what is measured.

About this data

This page compiles published data on ChatGPT's share of the consumer AI chatbot market and its position relative to competitors. The core figures come from Similarweb web-traffic estimates as compiled in Momentic's June 2026 report, supplemented by OpenAI's own user disclosures (reported by TechCrunch and Reuters) and First Page Sage's US-market estimates.

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.

Why ChatGPT's "market share" varies by source: reported figures range from about 55% to 68% because they measure different things. Similarweb web-visit share across a defined seven-app set puts ChatGPT near 54.7% worldwide; broader chatbot-market estimates that use different app sets or denominators report ~68%; US-only and mobile-app measures differ again. Web-visit share is used as the primary metric here because it is one defined, reproducible quantity — but it excludes native mobile apps, embedded surfaces (e.g. Copilot inside Microsoft 365), and API/enterprise usage, so it understates total model usage and does so unevenly across providers.

Methodology notes: the seven-app set covers standalone, general-purpose assistants on a separable web domain above ~50M monthly visits in mostly English-language markets; it excludes Meta AI, Character.AI, and major non-English assistants such as Doubao, Ernie, and Qwen, which would lower every share figure if added. Similarweb estimates are panel-modeled, carry error bands, and are revised monthly, so single percentages are best read as approximate. Some of Gemini's measured web visits may be driven by Google ecosystem entry points rather than independent demand.
