Which U.S. cities use AI the most? The answer is surprising — and it comes with an important caveat about data. The most rigorous source, Microsoft’s 2026 US AI Diffusion Report, ranks the 35 largest metro areas by overall AI usage, and the leaderboard upends expectations: Washington D.C. (39.7%), Dallas (39.4%), Miami (38.6%), and Houston (38.4%) top the list, with Sun Belt metros beating legacy coastal tech hubs, while Pittsburgh (25.8%) trails. But a crucial honesty note: no public dataset ranks ChatGPT specifically by metro with rigor. The Microsoft figures measure all AI tools (the best available proxy), and OpenAI’s own Signals data is state-level and relative-only. This page ranks U.S. metros by AI adoption, anchored on Microsoft’s US AI Diffusion Report (Q1 2026) for metro-level all-AI usage, with a ChatGPT-specific state-level proxy from SmartAsset’s analysis of OpenAI’s Signals Data (Feb 2026). It is also the most methodology-forward page in this set, because the topic invites a precision the data can’t honestly deliver.

Why this page is careful about what “ChatGPT by metro” can mean: the title topic — a rigorous metro-by-metro ChatGPT ranking — does not exist as reliable public data. Rather than manufacture one, we use the best real layers available: Microsoft’s metro ranking of all AI usage (rigorous, but not ChatGPT-specific) and OpenAI’s Signals data (ChatGPT-specific, but state-level and relative-only). We label each clearly and show the data hierarchy explicitly so readers know the confidence behind every number.

Methodology notes: the Microsoft metro figures are population-normalized estimates of any-AI usage among adults 15–64 — a strong proxy for ChatGPT-era adoption but not a direct ChatGPT measure. OpenAI’s Signals rankings are relative (messages per capita rank), not absolute, and are state-level. Chart 4 is an AIBI illustration of the data hierarchy, not a measurement. We chose transparency over false precision; if rigorous metro-level ChatGPT data is published, we’ll update.
