This page compiles published survey data on U.S. national AI adoption, anchored on Pew Research Center’s “Americans and AI 2026” report (a probability-based panel of 5,119 U.S. adults, fielded February 2026, margin of error ±1.6 points), with supporting figures from the Harvard Project on Workforce and Statista.
The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.
Why U.S. adoption figures range from ~34% to ~55%: they measure different things. Pew’s 49% is “use AI chatbots”; ChatGPT-specific “ever used” is 44% (Pew) or 34% in an earlier 2025 Pew wave; Harvard’s 54.6% is “adopted generative AI” among 18–64-year-olds. Different tools, definitions, age ranges, and survey dates produce different headline numbers — all pointing to the same mainstreaming trend. We anchor on the most recent, highest-quality probability sample (Pew 2026) and note the range.
Methodology notes: each chart cites its source. The adoption curve and tool/frequency breakdowns are from the Pew 2026 probability panel — among the most rigorous available. The age-gradient chart uses ChatGPT-specific “ever used” figures (from an earlier Pew wave via secondary reporting), so it is not directly comparable to the 49% “any chatbot” headline; we label it accordingly. Tool-usage percentages allow multiple selections and don’t sum to 100%.
