Gen Z AI Use at Work (Early Career)

For early-career Gen Z, AI isn’t a workplace novelty — it’s a default tool, and increasingly a career strategy. Roughly 74–83% of Gen Z workers use AI on the job, more than any older generation, and their use reaches well beyond drafting and summarizing: large shares lean on AI as an always-on career coach, using it to find learning opportunities, get career advice, and even manage work stress. The payoff can be real — AI “super-users” report being about three times more likely to have earned a promotion and raise in the past year. But the same habit carries a documented risk: most Gen Z workers admit over-reliance, many say they can’t work without it, and a majority worry that offloading cognitive work costs them the skill-building and mentorship that early careers depend on. About this data

This page compiles published data on how early-career Gen Z uses AI at work, drawing on Deloitte’s 2026 Gen Z & Millennial Survey (22,500+ respondents across 44 countries), a London School of Economics workforce survey, the GoTo/Workplace Intelligence 2026 Pulse of Work report (2,500 workers), and Harvard Business Review’s Gen Z AI research.

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.

Why workplace-use figures range from 74% to 83%: they’re different surveys with different framings — Deloitte’s 74% is “use AI to some extent in day-to-day work” (global, 44 countries); LSE’s 83% is “use AI at work” (a different sample and question). Both rank Gen Z first among generations; the gap reflects sampling and wording, not a real contradiction. We cite both and lead with the range.

Methodology notes: figures are from large multi-country (Deloitte) and workforce (LSE, GoTo) surveys. The “super-user” promotion finding is self-reported and correlational — AI-forward workers may differ in other ways — so we frame it as association, not proof that AI use causes promotions. Use-case percentages are multiple-select. The Stanford employment-decline figure is from a separate labor-economics study and describes AI-exposed occupations, not Gen Z workers overall.
