AI for Translation and Multilingual Writing

Translation was the first writing task where AI matched and then exceeded average human performance — neural machine translation has been credible since around 2016, and large language models have widened the gap since. Precedence Research estimates the AI-enabled translation services market at $5.18 billion in 2025, projected to reach $50.69 billion by 2035 (a 25.6% compound annual growth rate). DeepL achieves 89.5% accuracy on medical text translation versus 76% for Google Translate. RWS Holdings, one of the largest legacy language service providers, reports that AI-powered translation now accounts for 25% of revenue. This page tracks the market, the accuracy gains, and the disruption to professional translation.

Chart 1 · The market trajectory

Global AI translation services market, 2025–2035 forecast

Chart 2 · Accuracy by tool

Translation accuracy benchmarks (BLEU score)

Source: Gitnux 2026 industry benchmarks; published BLEU score evaluations. GPT-4 English-Spanish: 94.2% BLEU (2023). DeepL on medical text: 89.5% accuracy vs Google Translate 76% (same benchmark). Note: BLEU score has known limitations — it measures n-gram overlap with reference translations, not semantic fidelity. Modern LLMs often outperform BLEU rankings on human evaluations.
Chart 3 · Economic impact

AI's impact on translation economics, 2023

Source: Gitnux 2026 compilation. Per-word translation cost dropped 28% to $0.07 with AI. 65% of Fortune 500 firms reduced outsourcing costs by 40% with AI translation. AI saved language service providers an estimated $2.3B globally in 2023. Translation industry job market still expanded 8% in 2023 — driven by demand for human post-editing of AI output.
Chart 4 · Industry transformation

AI revenue share at legacy language service providers

Source: RWS Holdings FY 2024 annual report (£718.2M total revenue, 25% AI-powered translation); Mordor Intelligence Machine Translation Market Report 2025; DeepL funding announcement (May 2024: $300M Series B at $2B valuation). The legacy LSP industry is restructuring around AI rather than being disrupted by it — RWS, TransPerfect, Lionbridge, and Unbabel all now offer hybrid AI/human services as core revenue lines.

About this data

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI. This page focuses on AI applied to translation and multilingual content — covering both text translation tools (DeepL, Google Translate, GPT models for translation) and the broader language services industry transformation.

Two important methodological notes. First, "translation market size" varies dramatically by methodology — Precedence Research's $5.18B for AI-enabled translation services is much larger than Mordor Intelligence's $1.12B for pure machine translation software, because the former includes services revenue and the latter does not. We use the AI-services figure as the headline because it reflects how the category is monetized commercially. Second, BLEU score benchmarks have known limitations: they measure surface-level n-gram overlap with reference translations rather than true semantic fidelity, and modern LLMs often outperform their BLEU rankings on human-evaluated fluency. Treat the accuracy chart as a useful comparative signal rather than a precise measurement. Data is refreshed quarterly.
