AI for SEO and Search Marketing

SEO was one of the first marketing disciplines AI reshaped, and by 2026 it is nearly inseparable from it. Around 86–90% of SEO professionals have integrated AI into their workflows, roughly 56–61% of all marketers use generative AI specifically for SEO, and the work itself is changing — keyword research, content outlines, and on-page optimization are now AI-assisted by default. At the same time, search itself is transforming: zero-click results and AI Overviews are eroding traditional click-through, and a new discipline — Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — has gone from unheard-of to mainstream in barely a year. This page maps how deeply AI has penetrated SEO, what it is used for, and how the goalposts are moving from ranking position to multi-surface visibility.

Ranges reflect different measurement methods.

About this data

This page compiles published survey and market data on AI in SEO, drawing on 2026 research from DemandSage, SeoProfy, GoodFirms (first-party practitioner survey), SeoClarity, and aggregations citing Ahrefs, SparkToro, and Semrush.

The AI Behavior Index is the research arm of OneChat AI, an integrated multi-model AI platform. We compile and analyze data from primary research sources to make AI adoption and market trends more accessible to journalists, researchers, and decision-makers.

Why adoption figures range ~56% to ~90%: they measure different populations. The ~86–90% figures are SEO professionals who have integrated AI into their workflow; the ~56–61% figures are all marketers using generative AI specifically for SEO tasks. Both are rising; neither is a census. Zero-click figures also range (60% to 80%+) because studies define and measure "no click" differently.

Methodology notes: each chart cites its source. Use-case percentages are multiple-select and don’t sum to 100%. GEO/AEO adoption and the zero-click/AI-Overview figures come from a mix of first-party practitioner surveys and third-party search-analytics studies; the wide ranges reflect genuine measurement differences, which we show rather than averaging away. Market-size projections are analyst forecasts with the usual uncertainty.
